ABSTRACT The invention relates to a method and apparatus for recovering lignin and alkali from an alkaline lignin solution. One or more electrolytic cells are used to anodically acidify the alkaline lignin solution by electrolysis, precipitate lignin from the solution as a foam in the anode compartment and simultaneously to cathodically regenerate and recover alkali from the solution. The invention is essentially advantageous for the preparation of pure lignin and alkali from the waste liquor of a cellulose process.
