ABSTRACT OF DISCLOSURE The invention relates to a process for producing virus subunits with lipid envelopes. The process consists using a neutral or basic pH: (1)in dissolving a lower halogenated hydrocarbon, at a concentration equivalent to or approximating its limit of solubility, in an aqueous virus suspension, then (2) in contacting, with stirring, the preparation so obtained with a nonionic detergent at a minimal concentration effective to induce disruption of virions into heavy subunits for a length of time sufficientto permit said disruption, and (3) in separating the heavy subunits so obtained from the reaction medium. The invention process allows the preparation of purified disrupted antigens for use as vaccines, notably influenza vaccines.
