ABSTRACT The present invention relates to a process for recover- ing a hydrocarbon from a hydrocarbon-rich gel based on an ionic surfactant. The process comprises the steps of breaking down the gel by treating it with a laminar mineral carrying charges opposite to the charges of the surfactant and recovering the hydrocarbon liberated by the treatment. The ionic surfactant can be either a cationic or an anionic surfactant. Laminar silicates of the smectite type are preferred laminar minerals for breaking down gels based on cationic surfactants, whereas hydrotalcites are preferred for breaking down gels based on anionic surfactants.
