ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In a method of controlling a blast furnace to form pig iron using at least one reactor to heat a re- ducing gas, which reducing gas is introduced through at least one tuyere, the improvement resides in the steps of adjusting the composition and/or the temperature of the reducing gas in order to control the coke rate. At least one of the following components of the reducing gas is selected from the group consisting of CO2, H2O or N2 and/or the temperature of the reducing gas are varied, to increase the coke rate the amount of the components and/or the temperature of the reducing gas are increased, and to decrease the coke rate the amount of said components and/or the temperature of the re- ducing gas are decreased. It is furthermore possible to control the productivity of the furnace, the tempe- rature and/or Silicon content of the pig iron, and the temperature of the top gas of the furnace by varying the composition and/or the temperature of the reducing gas, Preferably, the reactor is a plasma torch and the re- ducing gas is heated to a range of 1500 to 2800°C. The coke rate is predetermined at a value between 50-350 kg/mt of pig iron produced, and preferably at a value of 80-200 kg/mt of pig iron produced.
