ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE .alpha.-olefins having at least 3 carbon atoms are polymerized in the presence of an organic acid ester by using a catalyst formed from a solid catalyst component and an organic aluminum compound represented by the formula: AlR43 wherein R4 is C1 6 alkyl. The solid catalyst component is prepared by reacting a reaction product of an aluminum halide and an organic silicon compound of the formula: R1nSi(OR2)4-n wherein R1 is phenyl or C1-8 alkyl, R2 is C1-8 alkyl and n is 1, 2 or 3, with a Grignard compound of the formula: RMgX wherein R3 is C1-8 alkyl and X is halogen; contact- ing tne carrier so obtained with a titanium tetrahalide and an organic acid ester in a single step; and then, contacting th treated solid with a titanium tetrahalide.
