PROCESS FOR POLYMERIZATION OF THERMOTROPIC POLYESTERS ABSTRACT Thermotropic polyesters consisting essen- tially of units derived from diphenols and aromatic dicarboxylic acids are prepared via monocarboxylic acid esters of the diphenols by acidolysis in two steps. The first step is a melt prepolymerization to form a prepolymer of inherent viscosity in the range of 0.12 to 0.16 dl g-1. The second step is a melt polymerization by a single pass through a wiped film reactor, in which the film of polymer melt is subjected to a high rate of shear and to a temperature in the range within which the polyester forms an anisotropic melt phase. The polyester product has an inherent viscosity of at least about 0.5 dl g-1.
