ABSTRACT An improved process for the preparation of methyl 2,3,4,5-tetrafluorobenzoylacetate is described. The process is for intermediates that lead to trifluoro- quinolinic acids which in turn are used to produce antibacterial agents of the difluoro quinolinecarboxylic acid type. The process runs at room temperature, uses a safe and inexpensive base, and can be conveniently scaled up for manufacturing purposes.
