A B S T R A C T A process for preparing 2-hydroxynaphaphthalene-3- carboxylic acid, which comprises reacting a mixture being liquid under the reaction conditions and consisting of (1) potassium .beta.-naphtholate, (2) .beta.-naphthol and (3) at least one reaction medium selected from the group consisting of aliphatic hydrocarbons, alicyclic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons and aromatic ethers with carbon dioxide at a reaction temper- ature of at least 180°C and a carbon dioxide pressure of at least 1kg/cm2.
