A B S T R A C T Process for preparation of a hydrogenation and/or dehydrogenation catalyst. The invention relates to a method for the preparation of a ruthenium promoted nickel and/or cobalt hydrogenation and/or dehydrogenation catalyst on a porous metal oxide support. Halogen is incorporated in the catalyst by adding a halide compound at any stage of the process in form of a non-ruthenium halide.
