A process for preparing 1,3-propanediol comprises the steps of: (a) reacting a cobalt salt selected from at least one of cobalt hydroxide, cobalt (II, 1II) oxide and cobalt carbonate with synthesis gas in an essentially non-water-miscible liquid medium under conditions effective to produce a cobalt carbonyl reaction product comprising at least one active cobalt carbonyl hydroformylation catalyst species; (b) contacting ethylene oxide with synthesis gas in an essentially non-water-miscible liquid medium in the presence of a catalytic amount of the cobalt carbonyl reaction product mixture and an effective amount of a catalyst promoter under reaction conditions effective to produce an intermediate product mixture comprising less than 15 wt.% 3-hydroxypropanal; (c) adding an aqueous liquid to said intermediate product mixture and extracting into said aqueous liquid a major portion of the 3- hydroxypropanal so as to provide an aqueous phase comprising 3-hydroxypropanal in greater concentration than the concentration of 3- hydroxypropanal in the intermediate product mixture, and an organic phase comprising a major portion of the cobalt carbonyl; (d) separating the aqueous phase from the organic phase; (e) returning at least a major portion of the organic phase to the process of step (b); (f) contacting the aqueous phase comprising 3-hydroxypropanal with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst under hydrogenation conditions to provide a hydrogenation product mixture comprising 1,3-propanediol; and (g) recovering 1,3-propanediol from the hydrogenation product mixture.

Un procédé de préparation de 1,3-propanediol comprend les étapes consistant: a) à faire réagir un sel de cobalt, choisi parmi au moins un hydroxyde de cobalt, un oxyde de cobalt (II, III) et un carbonate de cobalt, avec un gaz de synthèse, dans un milieu liquide essentiellement non miscible dans l'eau et dans des conditions efficaces pour obtenir un produit de réaction à base de carbonyle de cobalt comprenant au moins une espèce de catalyseur actif d'hydroformylation à base de carbonyle de cobalt; b) à mettre de l'oxyde d'éthylène en contact avec un gaz de synthèse dans un milieu liquide essentiellement non miscible dans l'eau, en présence d'une quantité catalytique du mélange de produits de réaction à base de carbonyle de cobalt, ainsi que d'une quantité efficace d'un promoteur de catalyse, dans des conditions de réaction efficaces afin d'obtenir un mélange de produits intermédiaires comprenant moins de 15 % en poids de 3-hydroxypropanal; c) à ajouter un liquide aqueux au mélange de produits intermédiaires, puis à procéder à une extraction, dans ce liquide aqueux, de la majeure partie du 3-hydroxypropanal, afin d'obtenir, d'une part, une phase aqueuse comprenant une concentration plus élevée en 3-hydroxypropanal que celle existant dans le mélange de produits intermédiaires, et d'autre part, une phase organique comprenant une majeure partie du carbonyle de cobalt; d) à séparer la phase aqueuse de la phase organique; e) à renvoyer au moins une majeure partie de la phase organique à l'étape b); f) à mettre la phase aqueuse comprenant du 3-hydroxypropanal en contact avec de l'hydrogène, en présence d'un catalyseur d'hydrogénation et dans des conditions d'hydrogénation, afin d'obtenir un mélange de produits d'hydrogénation comprenant du 1,3-propanediol; et g) à récupérer le 1,3-propanediol à partir du mélange de produits d'hydrogénation.
