A process is disclosed for preparing N,N,N',N'-tetra-(2-hydroxyethyl)- ethylenediamine in a solvent. Ethylenediamine is selectively reacted with ethylene oxide in the absence of water in one or several saturated C3-C9- alcohols at a temperature from 120 to 220 ~C, under a pressure from 2 to 60 bars, at a molar ratio from 1:4, producing a high yield. The reaction is preferably carried out in isopropanol, isomeric C7-C9-alcohol mixtures, C8 or C9 alcohol mixtures at a temperature from 140 to 180 ~C.

Selon ce procédé de préparation de N,N,N',N'-tétra-(2-hydroxyéthyl)-éthylènediamine dans un solvant, on fait réagir sélectivement avec un haut rendement l'éthylènediamine avec l'oxyde d'éthylène en absence d'eau dans un ou plusieurs alcools saturés en C¿3?-C¿9? à une température de 120 à 220 ·C et sous une pression de 2 à 60 bars, dans un rapport molaire de 1:4. On conduit de préférence la réaction dans l'isopropanol, les mélanges isomères d'alcools C¿7?-C¿9?, les mélanges d'alcools en C¿8? ou C¿9? à une température de 140 à 180 ·C.
