ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A novel process is described for preparing 2-(1- cyclohexenyl)ethylamine by reducing 2-phenylethylamine with lithium in the presence of a primary or secondary aliphatic alkylamine. In accordance with the present invention, the product is produced with a good yield, especially as compared with the yield previously obtainable with known processes. Furthermore, the concentration of completely reduced cyclohexylethylamine, as an undesirable by-product, is reduced by about a third compared to that produced in a conventional process. 2-(1-Cyclohexenyl)-ethylamine can be used as a starting compound for preparing dextromethorphan, an antitussive pharmaceutical.
