ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE 2,3,5,6-Tetrachloropyridine and penta- chloropyridine are prepared by reacting a chloro- substituted (trichloromethyl)pyridine in the liquid state with chlorine at temperatures of at least about 160°C in the presence of a Lewis acid type catalyst. The products are useful as intermediates for the preparation of herbicides and pesticides.
