ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: The invention relates to a process for the preparation of 2,5-dimethyl-2,4-hexadiene comprising the steps of contact- ing 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-hexanediol in liquid phase with an acid (or derivatives thereof or substances which set free acids) or aqueous solution thereof, heating the mixture thus obtained, distilling off the water which is formed, recycling the organic phase and finally separating the product obtained from the reaction mixture. This process shows a good yield and selectivity.
