Abstract Isobutylene carbonate and certain 1-substituted piperazine compounds are reacted in a process that forms 2-methyl-2-hydroxypropyl 4-substituted piperazine- 1-carboxylate compounds which are medicinal agents or synthetic intermediates for such agents. The essential features of the process allow the preparation of about a 9 to 1 proportion of 2-methyl-2-hydroxypropyl carboxylate compound over the unwanted, corresponding 1,1-dimethyl-2-hydroxymethyl structural isomer.
