PRECIS DE LA DIVULGATION: La présente invention a pour objet un procédé de préparation de l'acide 3-méthyl 3-hydroxy glutarique de formule (I): Image (I) caractérisé en ce que l'on fait réagir un produit de for- mule (II): CH3-CO-R (II) où R est un radical alcoxy (1 à 6 C), formyloxy, acyloxy (2 à 18 C) ou un atome d'halogène avec un produit de formule (III): X-CH2-CO2-R1 (III) où X est un métal alcalin et R1 est un radical alkyle (1 à 6 C), pour obtenir un produit de formule (IV): Image (IV) que l'on transforme en acide par saponification ou décompo- sition thermique. Le produit de formule (I) ci-dessus est utilisé en thérapeutique comme hypocholestérolémiant et hypolipémiant.
