ABSTRACT PROCESS FOR PREPARING (3S)-3-[[(2-AMINO-4- THIAZOLYL)](1-CARBOXY-1-METHYLETHOXY)IMINO]- ACETYL)AMINO]-2-OXO-1-AZETIDINESULFONIC ACID, AND 4-SUBSTITUTED DERIVATIVES Disclosed herein is a process for preparing a compound having the formula Image , which comprises coupling a compound having the formula Image or a salt thereof, with a compound having the formula Image to obtain a compound having the formula Image reacting that compound with 2-aminooxy-2-methyl- propanoic acid, or a salt thereof, to obtain a compound having the formula Image and, if R is an amino protecting group, deprotecting that compound to yield the desired product; wherein R is hydrogen or an amino protecting group; R1 is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl; M? is an inorganic cation or a substituted am- monium ion; and M? is hydrogen, an inorganc cation or a substi- tuted ammonium ion. The compounds thus prepared are .beta.-lactam anti- biotics which are useful for combating bacterial in- fections.
