ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE 9-carbamoyl-9-aminoalkylfluorenes of the formula: Image wherein R and R1 are independently hydrogen, C1-C4 alkyl, fluoro or chloro; R4 and R5 are independently hydrogen or C1-C6 alkyl, and R2 and R3 independently are hydrogen, C1-C6 alkyl, CH2(C2-C5 alkenyl), phenyl (C1-C3 alkyl), or taken together with the nitrogen to which they are attached are a cyclic group of the formula Image wherein R6 is hydrogen or C1-C4 alkyl; A is -CH2-, oxygen or nitrogen; and y is zero or one: or a pharma- ceutically acceptable salt thereof; are prepared by a process which comprises converting a compound of formula (I) Image (I) wherein R, R1, R4 and R5 are as defined above, to said 9-carbamoyl-9-aminoalkylfluorenes by (a) reduction in the presence of an amine having the desired R2 and R3 substituents; or (b) reduction of the nitrile group to a primary amino group followed by appropriate alkylation; and where desired forming a pharmaceutically acceptable salt of the 3-carbamoyl-9-aminoalkylfluorene of the first-mentioned formula herein so prepared. The 9-carbamoyl-9-aminoalkylfluorenes are antiarrhythmic agents.
