PROCESS FOR PREPARING A LENS OF SYNTHETIC POLYMER WITH AN ANTIREFLECTIVE COATING Abstract of the Disclosure There is disclosed a process for improving the antireflective characteristics of a synthetic polymer lens by the application of a base vitreous coating of a mixture of silicon dioxide and silicon monoxide having a simplified formula SiOx, wherein x is greater than 1 and less than 2 (1<x<2), herein called "silicon suboxide", by evaporating silicon monoxide under vacuum in an oxygen atmosphere so that a silicon suboxide condensate of controlled thickness and refractive index is formed on the outer surface of the lens. An outer coating, or coatings, is subsequently applied over said silicon suboxide coating. The outer coatings can be formed from one or more layers of material of complementary index of refraction and thickness designed to cooperate with the silicon suboxide layer to form optically active antireflective coatings.
