A novel procedure for molding composite structures is disclosed wherein the finished part. exhibits a net shape geometry requiring minimal further machining and displaying enhanced consolidation and surface characteristics. A composite preform having a follow core portion containing a polymer insert is introduced into a mold cavity. One end of the preform core is sealed and the preform together with the polymer insert is heated to melt the composite matrix and core polymer. Pressure is applied to the core at the other end of the part, causing radial expansion of the part against the molded cavity and consolidation of the composite into a finished part. A product finished part is also disclosed and is useful as a component of an orthopedic implant.
Nouveau procédé de moulage de structure composite dans lequel la partie finie présente une géométrie de forme nette ne requérant qu'un réusinage minimum et présentant des caractéristiques de consolidation et de surface améliorées. Une préforme composite présentant une partie d'âme creuse contenant un insert en polymère est introduite dans une cavité de moule. Une extrémité de l'âme de la préforme est obturée et la préforme ainsi que l'insert en polymère sont chauffés afin de fusionner la matrice composite et le polymère de l'âme. On applique une pression à l'âme au niveau de l'autre extrémité de la pièce, provoquant une dilatation radiale de cette dernière contre la cavité moulée ainsi qu'une consolidation du composite dans une pièce finie. L'invention concerne également une pièce finie utilisée comme constituant d'un implant orthopédique.
