ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for preparing an alkali metal mono- basic or dibasic periodate or their mixtures by reacting an alkali metal tribasic, tetrabasic or pentabasic periodate or their mixtures with an acidic substance at a temperature of from 0° to 350°C, a pressure of from 1 to 100 atmospheres, and a molar ratio of periodate to acidic substance of from 1:1 to 1:1000. The acidic substances that can be used are water, carbon dioxide, carbonic acid, sodium and potassium dichromates, tungsten trioxide, sodium bicarbonate, boron trioxide and orthoboric acid, and their mixtures. By this process, the desired products are prepared in good yields, and in contrast to prior art processes, the resulting by-products can be recovered and used as reactants in other processes or for neutralizing waste acid or process acid. 18449-F
