- 1 - ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for preparing alkaline earth metal mercaptides, useful as synergists for organotin stabilizers in halogen containing resins such as polyvinyl chloride, the process comprising preparing an alkaline earth metal alkoxide by reacting the metal oxide or hydroxide with an alcohol and then reacting the alkoxide with a mercaptan to provide the corresponding alkaline earth metal mercaptide, preferably while removing water from the reaction mixtures throughout the process.
