A B S T R A C T 7-Alkoxy-7-benzylideneaminocephem or 6-alkoxy- 6-benzylideneaminopenam compounds, which are useful as intermediates in the preparation of therapeutically active cephalosporins or penicillins, are prepared by reacting the corresponding 7-benzylideneaminocephem or 6-benzylideneaminopenam with a halide cation-producing compound in the presence of an alcohol and of a base capable of forming a salt with a phenolic hydroxyl group or of converting a phenolic hydroxyl group to a phenolate ion.
