- 1 - Abstract The present invention is directed to an alkyl- substituted hydrocarbon prepared by alkylating an alkyl aromatic hydrocarbon having at least one hydrogen atom at an alpha-position in a side chain with an olefin in the presence of a solid base as a catalyst. The solid base is obtainable by reacting an alumina with an alkali metal carbonate and/or aluminate and an alkali metal and/or its hydride in an inert gas atmosphere at a temperature of 180 to 800°C. The alkyl-substituted hydrocarbons of the present invetion are useful as intermediates in the production of agricultural, pharmaceutical and other chemicals.
