N-alkyl polyhydroxyalkyl amines such as N-methyl glucamine having a Gardner Color of less than 1 are reacted with sources of fatty acyl groups such as methyl esters, anhydrides, and/or fatty acids that have greater than 98 % transmittance at 460 nm in organic hydroxy solvents such as methanol to prepare N-alkyl polyhydroxy amine amides with good color. The N-alkyl polyhydroxy amines can be purified by crystallization, and/or subjected to reductive bleaching, to provide superior color. The reaction is preferably carried out at low temperature for short periods of time and with low catalyst levels to minimize formation of cyclic products. The resulting amide product can be further purified by treatment with anionic and cationic exchange resins to remove soap and amine impurities. The anionic ion exchange resin can be readily regenerated by acidifying it followed by washing with an organic solvent.
On fait réagir des N-alkyl polyhydroxy alkyl-amines telles que la N-méthyl-glucamine, présentant un indice de coloration en unités Gardner inférieur à 1, avec des sources de groupes acyle gras tels que des esters méthyliques, anhydrides et/ou acides gras ayant un facteur de transmission supérieur à 98 % à 460 nm dans des solvants hydroxy organiques tels que le méthanol, pour préparer des amides de N-alkyl polyhydroxyamines ayant une coloration satisfaisante. Lesdites N-alkyl polyhydroxyamines peuvent être purifiées par cristallisation et/ou soumises à un blanchiment réductif pour obtenir une coloration supérieure. Cette réaction est de préférence réalisée à basse température pendant de courts laps de temps et avec de faibles teneurs en catalyseur pour réduire au minimum la formation de produits cycliques. Le produit amide ainsi obtenu peut être encore purifié par un traitement avec des résines échangeuses d'anions et de cations dans le but d'enlever le savon et les impuretés des amines. La résine échangeuse d'anions peut être facilement régénérée par acidification suivie d'un lavage avec un solvant organique.
