ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method for producing certain novel finely divided amorphous, precipitated alkali metal alumino silicates having increased ion exchange properties is disclosed. The products of the invention are produced by commingling and precipitating, under certain controlled conditions, dilute aqueous solutions of an alkali metal silicate and alkali metal aluminate. Significant process variables include the chemical composition and concentration of the reactants, the precipitating tempera- tures, and pH, the sequence and rate of the addition of the reactants and the mixing intensity during the precipitation. The amorphous products of the invention have base or ion exchange capacities equal and/or superior to known crystalline zeolitic base exchangers or adsorbents and such may be used for water softening. Their use in detergents is also disclosed. - 1 -
