ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Titanium dioxide pigment particles are dispersed in an aqueous medium. A selected, relatively hard, polymeric latex is added, as well as a film-forming binder to give a formulated coating composition. The selected polymeric latex can include residues of polymerized dihydrogen phosphate functional groups, or have a high level of acid functional groups or greater than one percent itaconic acid. The selected latex particles improve the opacity of the coating film. Alternatively, a single selected polymeric latex is used to both improve opacity and to serve as binder, or a mixture of a selected polymeric latex having a low effective glass transition temperature and a conventional binder latex is employed.
