ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for preparing aromatic aldehydes and ketones in which the aldehyde or ketone function is bonded to the aromatic ring, wherein compounds of the formula ArCH2R in which Ar= aromatic radical, R=H or OH, or compounds of the formula ArCHXR in which Ar= aromatic radical, X-H, OH and R-alkyl, aryl, are oxidized by alkaline or ammonium persulphate in the presence of Fe salts or redox pairs of Fe/Cu or Ag/Cu salts.
