ABSTRACT A process for preparing aromatic hydroxy and alkoxy aldeydes wherein compounds of general formula Image in which R1 and R2, which can be the same or different, are hydrogen or alkyl containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms, are oxidised to compounds of formula Image (I) by air and/or oxygen in an acid environment, at a temperature of less than 100°C and at a pressure of 1 to 10 atm, in the presence of a catalyst consisting of an inorganic or organic copper compound, possibly mixed with an inorganic or organic iron compound.
