A B S T R A C T A process is provided for preparing bis(hydroxy- methyl)methylphosphine oxide, comprising (1) thermally re- arranging tris(hydroxymethyl)phosphine at elevated temper- atures in the presence of a catalytic amount of a strong, non-reactive acid, or a source thereof, to obtain the de- sired bis(hydroxymethyl)methylphosphine oxide, and (2) re- covering the latter compound from the reaction mixture.
