The invention relates to a process for preparing carboxylic esters by reacting dicarboxylic or polycarboxylic acids or their anhydrides with alcohols, the reaction water being removed by azeotropic distillation together with the alcohol and the amount of liquid removed from the reaction by the azeotropic distillation being replaced in whole or in part with the alcohol.
