Abstract of the Disclosure A process is disclosed whereby an improved platinum metal-containing catalyst is prepared. According to the process, a supported platinum metal catalyst is contacted with a hydroxylammonium salt, e.g. a sulfate, and a sulfur- containing compound, e.g. a salt of sulfurous ac??, di- thionous acid or thiosulfuric acid, which liberates sul- furous acid under acidic conditions, in a mine?al acid medium. The process is conducted substantially in the absence of reducing agents capable of reducing sulfurous acid to sulfide and is conducted under an atmosphere of inert gas. The sulfur compound is present in an amount corresponding to 15 to 150 atom ? sulfur based on the amount of platinum metal.
