A B S T R A C T A method for preparing a dense strong poly- crystalline .beta."-alumina-containing ceramic body of low electrical resistivity to sodium ion conduction at 300°C. comprises incorporating a soluble sodium salt and lithium salt in a slurry of alumina, drying and calcining the slurry, green forming the mixture and sintering the product.
