The invention relates to a process for preparing vinyl chloride by pyrolysis of 1,2-dichloroethane, which consists, in the absence of water vapour, in bringing 1,2-dichloroethane to a temperature of at least 480 degrees C, by mixing it with a hot gas stream or hot particles, maintaining the said mixture at this temperature for between 0.010 and 0.5 second, soaking the mixture, then separating the said mixture from the vinyl chloride formed.
