Cyanoacetic esters of the general formula: Image in which R is C1-10-alkyl, C3-10-alkenyl or aryl-C1-4-alkyl, are prepared by reaction of alkali metal cyanoacetates with the corresponding halides R-X, in which X is chlorine, bromine or iodine in an aqueous/organic two-phase system in the presence of a phase-transfer catalyst.
