ABSTRACT Process for preparing cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone by oxi- dizing cyclohexane with a gas containing molecular oxygen to form an oxidation mixture containing cyclohexyl hydroperoxide and treating the oxidation mixture with a metal salt in the presence of an aqueous solu- tion of an alkali metal hydroxide for the decomposition of the cyclo- hexyl hydroperoxide is characterized in that the treatment of the oxidation mixture is effected at a temperature of about 70 °C to about 115 °C. When temperatures less than 70 °C are employed the reaction velocity is too low. Temperatures in excess of about 115 °C unexpectedly reduced the yield of the desired products. Thus the about 70 °C to about 115 °C temperature range is critical. The process produces cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone of sufficient purity for conversion in nylon 6 mono- mers without intervening purification.
