ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention provides a process for the preparation of .DELTA.9(11)- and/or .DELTA.16-unsaturated steroids from 9.alpha.-and 16.alpha.-chloro- or 17.alpha.-acyloxy steroids of the pregnane series which comprises heating the starting steroid in an inert, aprotic high-boiling solvent to 180-350°C.
