Il est effectué par interéchange en milieu méthanolique, en présence de méthylate de magnésium comme catalyseur. Le procédé permet la régénération de téréphtalate de diméthyle à partir de déchets de fils ou films en polytéréphtalates ou copolytéréphtalates pour fabriquer des polytéréphtalates ou copolytéréphtalates utilisables pour la fabrication de fils ou films par exemple.
