ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: The present invention relates to a process for preparing ferromagnetic chromium dioxide and an improved product produced by said process. More particularly, the present invention relates to a process for preparing modified ferromagnetic chromium dioxide by thermal decomposition of hydrated chromium (III) chromate under high pressure, characterized in that a mixture of Cr2(CrO4)3?nH20 is prepared, in which n is comprised between 8 and 12, with small amounts of a substance selected from the group consisting of rhutenium, tellurium, rhutenium containing compounds and tellurium containing compounds, and heating the mixture to temperatures ranging from 250°C to 500°C under a pressure of at least 80 atmospheres. The process of this invention provides a simple and economical process for preparing modified chromium dioxide. It permits one to obtain a product having a good coercive force without reducing in an appreciable degree the product's saturation magnetization. The product produced by the present process exhibits good granulometry characteristics.
