ABSTRACT A new process for preparing high molecular weight polyesters is disclosed. The process comprises polycondensating an organic dicarboxylic acid or a derivative thereof with a mixture of alkanediols and alkenediols, with substantial exclusion of oxygen and in the presence of the catalyst, until a viscosity number of from 5 to 150 cm3/g is achieved. The polyester so obtained is subsequently treated with ionising radiation until a final, predetermined viscosity number is achieved. The process according to the invention allows to achieve very quickly the desired high final viscosity number and to prepare economically small amounts of polyesters having a very high molecular weight. The polyesters so obtained have good thermal, mechanical and pro- cessing stability and are used for producing films, sheathing, profiles, pipes, hollow articles and shaped elements produced by injection moulding or extrusion.
