ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for homogeneously precipitating hydrated alumina from a an aqueous solution comprising aluminum sulphate, the ratio of SO4--/Al3+ being at least greater than 1 wherein said precipitation is carried out in the presence of cationic polyelectrolytes in concentrations which do not form a phase separated solution, said cationic polyelectrolytes having a mean molecular weight greater than 1.0 x 106 and an ionicity of at least 3 milliequivalents per gram, and in the presence of compounds capable of gradually and uniformly releasing hydroxy ions, said hydrated alumina characterized by spherical particles having a diameter of between 0.06 and 3.0 microns and a polydispersion index, dw/dn, ? 2.--".
