13 ABSTRACT A gas mixture containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen is converted in one step into an aromatic hydrocarbon mixture by contacting the mixture with a bifunctional catalyst containing at least one metal component having activity for the conversion of a H2/CO mixture into oxygen- containing hydrocarbons and a crystalline silicate which a) is thermally stable up to temperatures above 600°C, b) is able - after dehydration at 400°C in vacuum - to adsorb more than 3 %w water at 25 C and saturated water vapour pressure, and c) in dehydrated form, has the following overall composition expressed in moles of the oxides (1.0?0.3)(R)2/n0.[a Fe203. b Al2O3]. (10-600)SiO2, where H = at least one mono or bivalent cation, a ? 0.1, b ? 0 , a + b = 1, and n is the valency of R.
