2136534 9324535 PCTABS00028 A process for the preparation of a low density porous cross-linked polymeric material comprises polymerizing a water-in-oil emulsion and reducing the polymerization and cross-linking time of the monomers without adversely affecting polymer properties or substantially affecting the emulsion by carrying out the curing in multiple-stages. Thus, the emulsion is first pre-cured at a temperature of less than 65 ·C until the emulsion reaches a rheometrics dynamic shear modulus of at least 500 pascal and then cured by heating at a temperature above 70 ·C.
