ABSTRACT A modified porous membrane can be prepared by dissolving an aromatic polymer having a thioether group in an organic solvent, forming a membrane of the aromatic polymer from the resultant solution by phase conversion and oxidizing the formed membrane. This modified porous membrane can effectively be utilized in a filtration method wherein ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis, fine filtration, gas separation, vapor permeation or pervaporation is conducted. - 103 -
