ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE O-(2,6-dichloroanilino) phenylacetic acid, known as a non-steroidic analgesic and anti-inflammatory under the general name of "Diclofenac" is prepared by hydrolyzing N-(sub- stituted or unsubstituted)-benzoyl-N-(o-cyanomethyl or alkoxy- carbonylmethylphenyl)-2,6-dichlorophenylamine. The inter- mediate material may be prepared by Chapman Rearrangement of 2,6-dichlorophenyl-N-(o-cyanomethyl or alkoxycarbonylmethyl- phenyl)benzimidate, which may be made by reacting 2,6-di- chlorophenol with N-(o-cyanomethyl or alkoxycarbonylmethyl- phenyl)-(substituted or non-substituted) benzimidoyl chloride.
