A process for preparing optically active diols represented by general formula (II), wherein R1 represents (CH2)n (wherein n is an integer of 1 to 4), CH=CH, O, S or NH; R2 represents hydrogen, C1-6-alkyl, C1-6-alkoxy, (C1-6- alkoxy)carbonyl, hydroxy, carboxy, halogeno, nitro or amino, characterized by treating a compound represented by general formula (I), wherein R1 and R2 are each as defined above with a microorganism belonging to the genus Rhodococcus, Bacillus, Brevibacterium, or Gordona and having a capability of stereoselectively converting a double bond of ring A into a single bond having vicinal hydroxyl groups, or a culture or optionally treated cells of Mortierella vinacea.

L'invention a trait à un procédé permettant de préparer des diols à activité optique représentés par la formule générale (II) (formule dans laquelle R?1¿ représente (CH¿2?)¿n? [n étant un nombre entier d'une valeur comprise entre 1 et 4], CH=CH, O, S ou NH, R?2¿ représente un hydrogène, un alkyle comportant de 1 à 6 atomes de carbone, un alcoxy comportant de 1 à 6 atomes de carbone, un (alcoxy en C¿1-6?)carbonyle, un hydroxy, halogéno, nitro ou amino). Ce procédé se caractérise par le traitement d'un composé représenté par la formule générale (I) (où R?1¿ et R?2¿ sont, chacun, tels que définis ci-dessus) au moyen d'un micro-organisme appartenant au genre Rhodococcus, Bacillus, Brevibacterium ou Gordona et capable de convertir de manière stéréosélective une double liaison d'un noyau A en liaison simple possédant des groupes hydroxy voisins ou bien au moyen d'une culture, éventuellement traitée, de cellules de Mortierella vinacea.
