ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for preparing organic thioethers of formula R-S-R1 in which R is an aliphatic, aryl, arylalipllatic or heterocyclic radical anti R1 is an aliphatic or arylali- phatic radical, from organic dithiocarbonates and organic halides or sulphonates, in the presence of an aqueous alkaline base and a phase transfer catalyst, at a temperatu- re of between 50° and 100°C for a time of 10-60 minutes. The process allows the preparation of large classes of products used as dyestuff and pharmaceutical intermediates, and as pesticides herbicides, oxidation inhibitors, lubri- cating oil additives and the like.
