A B S T R A C T This invention relates to a process for preparing peat fibers from peat. The process involves preparing a suspension of peat, whereby peat fibers are liberated from the parent material. Course particles are separated in a dewatering step, and peat fiber material of a desired water content is obtained. The invention provides a process in which colloidal particles are isolated from colloid containing water, a byproduct of peat processing, and in which the water is recycled into the peat suspension. This makes it possible to use a simple, mobile installation which is suitable for use almost all year round, in relatively small peat areas which may be poorly drained or otherwise up to now unsuitable for peat exploitation.
