There is provided a process for preparing penem es- ters having antibacterial activity, starting from a com- pound of formula (11) wherein R1 is H or a hydroxy pro- tecting group and Z is a C1-C10 alkyl or an aryl group which is reacted with a compound of formula (III) to give an azeotidinon which is condensed with a com- pound of the formula (V): XOC - COO - CH2OCOCH3, and cyclized to obtain the desired penem esters. The present invention also comprises a process for preparing a compound of formula (V) oxydizing a compound of the formula: HO-CH2-COO-CH2OCOCH3.
