This invention involves the preparation of pentafluoroethane (F-125) by catalytic hydrogenation of chloropentafluoroethane (F-115) in the vapour phase. The use of a palladium-based catalyst deposited on a support of aluminum, fluorinated alumina or aluminum fluoride provides excellent selectivity for F-25, and avoids the formation of 1,1,1-trifluoroethane (F-143a).
